Where does Messenger save photos? Here’s where to find them

Where are Messenger photos stored?

Facebook Messenger is a part of Facebook but, over time, became more of an instant messenger than an actual extension of the social media platform. And all the usual jazz is there — video and voice calls, photos, videos, and even games to play together. Some users were wondering where Facebook Messenger saves photos and videos. And we made sure to provide a thorough explanation below.

Where are Messenger photos stored?

Messenger photos and videos are available online for each particular chat (conversation). You can Save them to the local storage at any time. When you download photos, you should be able to find them on the internal storage, in the Messenger folder.

How to save photos and videos from Facebook Messenger

First of all, all photos and videos you’ve shared or received in a regular Messenger conversation are stored on Facebook servers and you can access them whenever you please. Not on your device unless you explicitly save them.

You can find all photos and videos you exchanged on Facebook Messenger by following these steps:

  1. Open Facebook Messenger.
  2. Select the conversation/chat from where you want to get photos.
  3. Tap on the “i” icon at the top right corner.
  4. Select View photos & videos.where does messenger save photos
  5. From there, you can download or forward any photo or video. They are chronologically placed from newer to older.

Unless, of course, they got deleted from the conversation. Of course, this applies just to the standard chats, not the Vanish mode or Secret conversations. The latter offers end-to-end encryption so no data is stored on Facebook servers. The former is self-explanatory — all messages vanish as soon as you close the chat.

Again, these photos aren’t stored in your Gallery and local storage unless you choose to save them. One by one. There’s an option to save automatically photos or videos you create in Messenger.

You can find it in Messenger > Profile (Settings) > Photos & Media. Toggle the Save on capture feature to save all photos and videos created with Messenger to the local storage.

Where Facebook Messenger stores photos and videos I downloaded

To summarise, you can save photos and videos in Messenger if you tap and hold on to them and select Save Image or Save Video in chat or go to View photos & videos and save them from there. But, where does the Facebook Messenger store download photos and videos?

This might differ based on your Android device, but the usual locations are Picture and Movies folders in the internal storage. In both folders, you’ll find the Messenger folder with your photos and videos, respectively.

From there, you can back up your photos and videos, delete them, or edit them. As simple as that. Of course, if you can’t find photos and videos there, check the Download folder or DCIM in the internal storage root or look into Android > Media. Although, these paths come into play only if you have a super-old Android handset.
