The stock Weather App on iOS was never the greatest iPhone app this OS had to offer. Apple even acquired Dark Sky, one of the best weather forecast apps in the market, to improve the Weather App. Sadly, a few years have passed and the app is still far from Dark Sky which is being discontinued. The most recent issue with the Weather app is that it won’t update or refresh on iOS 16.1. This applies both to the app itself and the Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets. We made sure to provide you with some applicable solutions below.

Why is my iPhone Weather app not loading?
If your iPhone Weather app is not loading or refreshing, try refreshing manually, use Custom location, check permissions, or reinstall the Weather app. However, you’ll most likely need to wait for the next update where Apple will, hopefully, sort out the problem.
1. Swipe down to refresh
This is hardly a solution and more of a simple workaround. Open the Weather app (tap on the widget or the app shortcut) and swipe down to refresh it. Or you can cycle between various locations until they load by swiping left or right.
If you use your current location and not the custom one you entered manually, ensure the location services are enabled. In addition, you can restart your iPhone and check if the widget or the app is timely refreshing. Don’t forget to keep your iPhone up to date. The problem is somewhat recent and we do expect Apple to sort it out in due time. You can check for available updates in Settings > General > Software Update.
If that did nothing, you can try the custom location instead of using the location services with My Location.
2. Use a Custom Location
You can configure multiple locations besides My Location (the current one acquired by Location Services). We are aware that this isn’t ideal for those who frequently travel but it should be good enough as a temporary solution. At least, until Apple pushes an update to patch up the problem mostly present on iOS 16.1.1, keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to the Lock Screen weather widgets that require Location Services in order to show you weather information.
Here’s how to use a custom location in the Weather app on your iPhone:
- Open the Weather app.
- Tap on the menu at the bottom right corner.
- Search for your city/location and select it from the list of results.
- Tap Add in the top right corner.
- Now, tap and hold on to the Home Screen weather widget and select Edit Widget.
- Select the custom location you just added.
3. Check the Location Services
The Weather app is probably the app that depends the most on Location Services in the background. Especially for the Lock Screen widget which won’t work at all unless it retains permanent background access to your exact location. So, if the Weather app won’t update or show the forecast on iOS, make sure to grant it full access and check again.
Here’s how to grant Location Services access to the Weather app on your iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Open Location Services. Make sure to enable Location Services.
- Select Weather from the list of apps.
- Select Always and enable the Precise Location option.
4. Reinstall the Weather app
The next thing you can try is simply reinstalling the Weather app. Although Weather comes as a preinstalled app, you can delete it and install it again from the App Store. Hopefully, after you install it again, the app and its widgets will refresh automatically, as they should.
Here’s how to reinstall the Weather app on your iPhone:
- Tap and hold on to the Weather App Home Screen or App Library shortcut.
- Tap Remove App in the contextual menu.
- Now select Delete App.
- Restart your iPhone.
- Open the App Store, search for weather, and install the app again.
- Once more, navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Weather and set Location Services Access for the Weather App to Always.
If that does nothing, we can only recommend resetting All Settings although it’s questionable if this will help. The only thing you can do is report the problem to Apple and hope that the next update will sort it out. Thank you for reading and don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
