How to turn off Trending Searches on Chrome and Google App

Besides your previous queries, Google Search Engine can provide you with trending searches from your region. You’ll notice the trend arrow next to keywords whenever you tap into the search bar. Some users don’t want it and tried to disable it but with no luck. If you’re among them, check the instructions we provided below.

Why can’t I remove trending searches on Google?

Usually, you should be able to remove trending searches without any issues in both Chrome and the Google app. As explained in the first two steps. However, if you still can’t do it, make sure to check the additional steps we provided below.

Of course, don’t mix up your recent searches taken from your browsing history with Trending Searches. If you want to disable search history, you’ll need to use the Incognito mode.

1. Turn off Trending Searches in Chrome

If you want to disable Trending Searches in Chrome or any other browser where you’re signed in with your Google Account, you’ll need to navigate to google.com and open Settings there. Remember that this applies only to that particular device and you’ll need to change it in Chrome on your PC, too. So, the fact that you have the same Google Account on Chrome for mobile and Chrome for PC doesn’t mean they share settings, for reasons known only to Google.

Here’s how to turn off Trending Searches in Chrome for Android or iOS:

1. Open Chrome on your smartphone.
2. Navigate to google.com.
3. Tap on the hamburger menu at the top left corner and select Settings. On your PC, click on Settings at the bottom right corner and select Search settings.
4. Under the Auto-complete with trending searches, choose Do not show popular searches.
5. Don’t forget to tap Save at the bottom.

After that, the page will refresh and you shouldn’t see any Trending Searches when accessing the Omnibox/address bar/search bar.

2. Turn off Trending Searches in the Google app

If you use the Google app to browse the web on your Android or iPhone, you can easily disable Trending Searches under general settings. That way, only your most recent search queries (search history) will appear when you tap on the Search bar. Once you toggle off the option, the Trending Searches from your region should stop appearing.

Here’s how to disable Trending Searches in the Google app:

1. Open the Google app or enter the Discover page by swiping right on the Home Screen.
2. Tap on your Account icon at the top and open Settings.
3. Choose General.
4. Disable the “Autocomplete with trending searches” option.

3. Disable Discover in Google Chrome

Some users suggest disabling Discover in Google Chrome. Although this is not related to trending searches, it seems that the pop-up stopped appearing only after Discover was gone from the home page. You can disable Discover in Google Chrome if you tap on Settings (cog icon) while being on the Home Page.

After that, just tap Turn off in the contextual menu. If that did nothing and you still get trending searches, try signing out and signing in with your Google account in Google Chrome.

4. Sign out and sign in again with your Google Account

Others managed to get rid of trending searches by simply signing out and signing back in with the Google Account. Since the Google app (Google Feed) is directly integrated with the main Google Account on your device, you’ll need to remove the account and add it again in system settings. On the other hand, you can sign out in Chrome, and removing your Google Account is not necessary.

Here’s how to sign out and sign in again on Chrome for Android/iOS:

1. Open Chrome.
2. Tap on your Account to bring out Settings.
3. Select your Account from the top.
4. Tap Sign out and turn off sync.
5. Check the “Also clear your Chrome data from this device” box.
6. Tap Continue.
7. Now, get back to Chrome, tap on the Account icon, and sign in again by selecting your account.

For the Google app, you’ll need to navigate to system Settings > Accounts > Manage Accounts and remove your Google Account there. You might need to disable Trending Searches once more, as explained in the second step.

5. Clear local data from the Google app

You can also try to clear local data from the Google app. This app tends to pile up a lot of data which is expected considering how many Google services depend on it. Data corruption is not unusual and many issues users experience with the Google app usually get solved once you delete all the local data.

Here’s how to clear local data from the Google app on Android:

1. Open Settings.
2. Choose Apps.
3. Select Google from the app list.
4. Tap Storage.
5. Select Manage storage.
6. Tap Clear all data and confirm.

Besides that, we recommend leaving the Beta program for the Google app as it’s more bug-prone than the stable version. You can do that in Play Store, once you expand the Google app. You should see the “You’re a beta tester” section and the Leave hyperlink under it. Tap to leave the beta program and check for updates.

6. Change the default Search Engine

Finally, if none of the previous steps worked for you and you absolutely can’t stand the auto-fill Trending Searches, you can switch to an alternative search engine. This is merely a solution (more of a workaround), but it’s the last thing that comes to mind. At least for Google Chrome.

Here’s how to change the default Search Engine in Google Chrome:

1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Tap on the Account photo at the top to open Settings.
3. Select Search engine.
4. Choose one of the alternative search engines.
