How to turn Autoplay off on YouTube (2023)

Disable YouTube Autoplay on mobile and PC

YouTube Autoplay is definitely an essential feature on the largest video streaming platform. However, thanks to the often unreliable algorithm, you might get recommended videos that are not really your point of interest. So, more often than not, I prefer to keep autoplay off and curate and play videos that I like by hand. If you want to turn Autoplay off on YouTube, too, learn how to do it below, both on your mobile and PC.

Table of contents:

  1. Turn Off YouTube Autoplay on Android and iOS
  2. Disable Autoplay on your PC
  3. Turn off Playback in Feeds

Disable YouTube Autoplay on mobile and PC

1. Turn Off YouTube Autoplay on Android and iOS

You can turn autoplay off on YouTube for Android in two ways. There’s a toggle in each video that enables or disables autoplay and then there’s the toggle in Settings. Both are global settings and apply to all videos, so it’s just a question of personal preference where exactly you want to put an end to the neverending series of clips coming one after another.

Here’s how to disable YouTube Autoplay on Android:

  1. Open any clip and, in portrait or landscape mode, look for the toggle at the top. Tap it to disable or enable Autoplay.
  2. Alternatively, open YouTube and tap on the profile (account) photo at the top right corner.
  3. Open Settings.
  4. Select Autoplay.
  5. Toggle off the Autoplay next video feature.disable autoplay youtube android ios

2. Disable Autoplay on your PC

On the other hand, there’s no dedicated option to turn off autoplay on YouTube for desktop browsers. The only way to disable autoplay is to disable autoplay in videos. Just open any video and you should see the Autoplay toggle at the bottom, preceding other options like Captions, Settings, and Mini player.turn autoplay off youtube

When Autoplay is off, you’ll see the Pause icon and when it’s On, you’ll see the Play icon. As simple as that. In case you are watching clips in a playlist, you won’t be able to pause the next clip with the Autoplay toggle. Although, you reorder clips to your liking and enable Repeat or Shuffle.

3. Turn off Playback in Feeds

Now, the Autoplay option concerns playback of the next video when the current one finishes. It either gets the recommended video based on the viewing history or relation to the current video (e.g. the video is a part of a content creator’s playlist) or the user-based queue. And that’s that. However, YouTube also has the playback in feeds (Home tab) on Android and iOS. And you can disable it, too.

Recommended videos under the Home tab will keep playing without sound as a preview (with captions) by default. It all comes to a personal preference and I am not really a fan so I keep it off.

Here’s how to turn off Playback in feeds on Android and iOS:

  1. Open YouTube.
  2. Tap on the account picture in the top right corner and open Settings.
  3. Select General.
  4. Open Playback in feeds.
  5. Tap Off to disable this feature. You can also choose to use it only on Wi-Fi or enable it on mobile and Wi-Fi (Always on).turn autoplay off youtube

And, with that said, we can conclude this article. So, to summarize, you can turn autoplay off on YouTube in any video with the Autoplay toggle. Just look for the Play/Pause toggle in the toolbar.
