Spotify Stops Playing when Screen is Off and Media Controls not Working

Spotify is, for more than a few reasons, the most popular music streaming service in the world, especially on handheld devices run by iOS and Android. However, some Android users have had a hard time using media controls on the lock screen recently. More than a few Samsung Galaxy S10 users reported that Spotify Lock screen media controls are not working on their devices.

We made sure to search for applicable solutions and provide them below.

Table of contents:

  1. Check Lock Screen settings
  2. Clear cache and data from Spotify
  3. Disable Battery optimization
  4. Reinstall Spotify

Fix: Spotify Stops Playing when Screen is Off

Solution 1 – Check Lock Screen settings

The first thing you should do is to check the Lock Screen settings and allow Spotify to create its own widget. In order to do so, you should disable the stock MusicFace widget.

Follow these steps to disable the MusicFace widget:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Lockscreen.
  3. Open FaceWidgets.
  4. Disable the Music widget.
  5. Reboot your device and check for the resolution.

Solution 2 – Clear cache and data from Spotify

If the previous step hasn’t solved the problem, we suggest navigating to Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Spotify and clearing cache and data from the app.

That way, you’ll basically reset the app. However, keep in mind that clearing the local data will delete all downloaded music.

Here’s how to clear cache and data from Spotify:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose Apps.
  3. Open Spotify.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Clear cache and data from the Spotify app.

Solution 3 – Disable Battery optimization

Some users suggested that the best solution for the unresponsive media commands on S10’s lock screen is to disable battery optimization for Spotify. This will allow Spotify Lock screen media controls that are not working to start working in the background.

If you are not sure how to do that, follow these instructions:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Apps.
  2. Open Spotify.
  3. Select Battery optimization.
  4. Disable Battery optimization for Spotify and reboot your device.

Solution 4 – Reinstall Spotify

Finally, if none of the previous steps worked for you, reinstall Spotify and start from scratch.

With that said, we can conclude this article. Thank you for reading and, in case you have any questions or suggestions, make sure to tell us in the comments section below.
