With the introduction of RCS messaging, many users enjoy the benefits of new messaging options. Still, there are some minor issues that need to be ironed out before we can say that this transition from SMS/MMS to RCS is a complete success. Namely, some users keep getting the Sent as SMS via Server prompt when they send messages. What is the reason for this occurrence and what you can do to disable this message completely? Learn below.
Table of contents:
1. Why does Sent as SMS via Server message appear?
Send as SMS via Server means that the messages are sent as SMS or MMS instead of RCS/Advanced Message and your recipient will see it as a standard text message.
If you use the RCS messaging protocol on your device and exchange messages with users that only use SMS/MMS, the message you sent will go through as SMS by default. Your recipients won’t get photos, videos, and all the other multimedia files you want to share over RCS. The same applies if you don’t have an internet connection while sending a message. That’s why the app informs you that the message is getting converted.
So, before doing anything else, ensure that both you and your recipients have RCS enabled. Chat features, Advanced messaging, or simply RCS (Rich Communication Services) allow Android Messages and Samsung Messages users to share more than simple texts. It brings the same functionality one would find in instant messengers like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal. You’ll need an internet connection to use them (Wi-Fi or mobile data); if you don’t, the app will resort to SMS/MMS, just as usual.
2. How to disable this message
Now, the message seemingly appears only on certain carrier networks, and not all. Some users say that the message disappeared when they enabled Delivery Report in settings. Others say that did nothing. It’s hard to pinpoint if the problem is in the app or carrier. Still, there are some things you can do to troubleshoot this.
Here are some steps you can try to disable Sent as SMS via Server message whenever you send an RCS message:
- Enable Delivery reports. Open Samsung Messages. Then tap on the 3-dots menu in the top right corner and open Settings. Select More settings and open Text messages. Enable “Show when delivered“.
- Disable Auto-send as SMS if Chat isn’t delivered. Open Messages > 3-dots menu > Settings > Chat settings and tap on “If chat isn’t delivered”. Select Don’t resend.
- Disable Chat features and enroll again. Open Messages > 3-dots menu > Settings > Chat settings and disable Chat features. Restart your Samsung phone, follow the same path, and re-enable Chat features.

- Clear data from Samsung Messages in Settings > Apps > Messages > Storage.
- Make sure that the Messages app is up to date along with the phone’s firmware.
- Test out another SIM card to see if this is a carrier-related problem. If the problem doesn’t occur, contact your carrier.
