The Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro (also known as the Mi 9T Pro outside India) feels like a sure bet. It successfully bridges the gap between the flagship and budget segments by bringing the best of both worlds. The flagship-level specs at the budget price.
This business model has already proven to be a recipe for success in recent years. Smartphone prices are going through the roof, and customers are looking for the remedy in models like this. That’s why the Pocophone F1 was big last year, and that’s why the K20 Pro /Mi 9T Pro threatens to take its place as the people’s champion now (at least until Xiaomi throws the Poco F2 at us). And most importantly, that’s why you ended up buying this phone.
Many reviewers will tell you that because of the phone’s cost, you have to be content with potential downsides and issues. I would like to argue with that. If you bought the Redmi K20/Mi 9T Pro, you clearly want the most for your money. So, just because you didn’t pay $1000+, doesn’t mean you must let the problems sit there like they’re part of the deal. Instead, you should go and try your best to resolve them.
And that brings us to the main point of this article. I’ve gone through various forums online and concluded a list of the most common problems (and fixes) with the Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9 T. So, in case you encountered any issue with your brand new phone, I hope you’ll find the solution here.
Note: All the issues mentioned in this article are individually reported cases, and they might never occur on other devices. If you’re looking to buy this phone, and stumbled upon this article while researching it, DON’T take these problems into consideration.
Table of contents:
- Wi-Fi not working
- Popup camera not working
- Screen flickering
- Microphone not working
- Headphones not playing music
- Random reboots
1. Wi-Fi not working
The problem with connecting to Wi-Fi isn’t a widespread problem. But that doesn’t really matter to you if you’re currently experiencing this issue. So, in case you’re unable to properly connect to a Wi-Fi network, try some of the following solutions:
- Delete all networks and try reconnecting.
- Disable Always On for Mobile Data in Developer options.
- Restart your router.
- Reset App Preferences.
- Reset Network Settings. Open Settings > More > Reset WLAN, mobile & Bluetooth.
- Wipe cache partition.
- Reset the device to factory settings.
2. Popup camera not working
The popup camera is surely the K20 Pro’s highlight feature. However, some users reported that it doesn’t always work as intended. You certainly don’t want your camera to fail at popping up every time, especially if you’re already skeptical about this technology.
When you experience this issue, there’s really nothing you can do about it, software-wise. You either wait for a potential system update that will address the problem, or replace your phone.
Luckily, you’re closer to the first option. Xiaomi already released an update that addresses the popup camera issue, per 91Mobiles. So, if you haven’t already, go on and update your phone. Hopefully, the problem will be resolved.
3. Screen flickering
The Redmi 20 Pro’s AMOLED screen is another reason why many users upgraded to this phone. The display may not be the best in the business, but it still provides a satisfying experience.
However, a few users reported strange screen flickering when the display is set to low brightness. If you recently encountered such a problem, try some of the following solutions:
- Update your phone. Xiaomi should eventually release a patch.
- Adjust brightness.
- Install the OLED Saver app as a temporary solution until Xiaomi fixes the problem.
4. Microphone not working
Microphone issue shouldn’t be widespread, as I only found a single report in the forums. Nevertheless, people who encountered this issue suggest restarting Google Assistant as a solution. So, that’s what I’m going to recommend, as well.
Google services > Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant > Assistant tab > Phone > Google Assistant toggle OFF
Here’s how to do that:
- Go to Settings.
- Go to Search, Assistant & Voice > Google Assistant.
- Head over to the Assistant tab, find your phone and tap it.
- Toggle Google Assistant off.
Now, restart your phone, and check if the microphone started working. To re-enable Google Assistant, repeat the procedure above, and toggle it on.
5.Headphones not playing music
The same thing goes for headphones. If your Bluetooth headphones are not playing music, try the following solution:
- Go to Settings.
- Head over to Sound > Earphones > Headphones and audio effects.
- Choose the Control volume button option.
6. Random reboots
I’ve only seen reports of random reboots from users who are on custom ROMs. So, if you’ve recently encountered a similar problem, I’m assuming you’re also using a custom ROM.
Flashing custom ROMs is already a journey of its own and the issues which might occur are probably well-known to all advanced users. And since we’re not writing about custom ROMs here, try searching for a solution someplace else, where people are people are dealing with similar issues, like the XDA forums.
If you can’t find a solution after all, I’d suggest reflashing the stock ROM and sticking with it for some time. At least until developers of your current ROM deal with all the potential problems.
That’s about it. I certainly hope you found a solution to your problem, or at least you understand it better now. If you have any comments, questions, or a problem I didn’t mention in this article, feel free to write it down in the comments below.
