Although the world is rapidly moving towards other ways of communicating (thanks to 4G/LTE/5G), Voicemail is still there and still has importance for so many people. Some users reported that they are not getting voicemail on iPhones. Some got notified about new messages but can’t access them while others don’t have any clue if there’s any new voicemail message. Why is Voicemail not working on my iPhone?
There are multiple reasons why this issue may occur, but we are most inclined to believe that the problem is on the network/carrier side. Restart your phone, check with your carrier and, if nothing helps, try resetting Network Settings to their default values.
1. Make sure Voicemail is properly set up
The first thing to do is to try restarting your iPhone, that might help. Now, make sure that Voicemail is properly set up on your device. You can check it on Phone > Voicemail. Even better, you can reset it by changing the password and adding another greeting, custom or default.
You can do that in Settings > Phone. If you are still not getting voicemail on your iPhone, move to the next step.
2. Check your network
In order to receive voicemail, the same rule applies as with calls — you need good network coverage. If the cellular network is a problem for you, try removing the SIM card and placing it back.
Alternatively, you can enable and then disable the Airplane mode to restart the cellular antenna. If that doesn’t help, move to the next step.
3. Update iOS
Many official sources state that problems like this (if not on the carrier side) are easily mitigated by simply updating your iOS to the latest supported version. Ideally, that would be iOS 14.5 as the optimization and bug fixes are usually on the latest iteration. Of course, if your device is older than the iPhone 6s, you won’t be able to get the latest stable version of iOS.
Although updates are automatically administered by default, you can check for updates manually and install them:
4. Check with your carrier
This is usually the number one reason why users are not getting voicemail on their iPhones. Often, the problem lies with the carrier and the way they administer voicemail. There are different protocols in different countries so make sure to contact your carrier and ask for instructions.
If they confirm that everything is as intended but you are still experiencing problems with voicemail on your iPhone, make sure to reset network settings.
5. Reset Network Settings
Finally, we can only suggest resetting network settings and hoping for the best. This procedure will restore all Wi-Fi, Cellular, and Bluetooth to their factory values. Keep in mind that it will erase all Bluetooth pairings, all Wi-Fi networks, and APN settings.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Select Reset from the bottom of the list.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Confirm with your PIN/Password.
