Nokia 5 common issues, and how to solve them

Published

Nokia is back, ladies and gents! After the Microsoft gimmicks, they decided to move on Android and it seems that’s paying off. For starters, they decided to present the three devices for three categories. In the middle, we have one of the best budget phones on the market right now, Nokia 5. The slick metal design, passable hardware specs, solid camera, and clean Android are the main traits.

This handset doesn’t have many issues, but it does have some. We conducted a research and find a few of the most common issues that are bothering Nokia 5 users. We made sure to enlist them below and provide you with the best-suited troubleshooting steps. We hope that you find them informative.

So, without further ado, in case you have had any mischiefs with your Nokia 5, make sure to check the list below.

Low call quality

Some users reported issues with the low in-call sound quality. The speakers are not as loud as one would expect, but still, we’re talking about a budget device that lacks a punch that more expensive devices have. Nonetheless, even though there’s no way to improve hardware, you can perform some tweaks in order to improve the overall experience while talking on the phone.

  • Remove casings or other screen protectors that might cover the front speaker.
  • Make sure that you have network coverage.
  • Turn Off Bluetooth while speaking on the phone. In rare occasions, it can interfere with the signal.
  • Restart your device.
  • Use a third-party app to tweak speaker.

Have in mind that the problem might be on the other side. If one on the other side has a faulty mic, it’ll obviously affect the sound quality. On the other hand, if you’re experiencing problems on a large scale, there’s a chance that the hardware is affected. In that case, make sure to contact the support or responsible carrier or retailer.

Camera issues

If there’s one thing that users seem to complain about in regard to Nokia 5, it’s the primary camera performance. Nokia is renowned for great camera options throughout the years, but that’s certainly not the main trait of Nokia 5. The camera itself isn’t bad per se, but the following software is causing issues for some users. Nokia promised clean Android and, if that’s even possible, it’s too clean for some people liking.

Namely, in order to preview and access taken photos on stock Nokia 5, you’ll be using Google Photos after. That shouldn’t be the case but, allegedly, an update broke this function. Some users managed to resolve this problem by either downloading the third-party camera app or by restoring the factory settings.

Another problem is related to camera crashes. That might be resolved by simply resetting your device or, in the long shot, by wiping cache partition.

Overheating

Overheating is another problem that’s bothering some users. Because of its premium metal design that even some flagships don’t have, Nokia 5 tends to overheat more than your usual handset. However, that’s nothing to worry about. If the temperature reaches critical levels, the phone will shut down on its own to prevent possible hardware damage. For the purpose of reducing the temperature, follow the steps below:

  • Don’t use your device while charging. That’s where the phone will heat the most.
  • Kill some resource-hogging background apps. They can go hard on CPU and there so cause overheating.
  • Remove the casing.
  • Don’t expose your device to open sunlight for extended period of time.
  • If you tend to play GPU-intensive games, make sure to take a break from time to time.

Battery longevity

There’s nothing wrong with the 3000 mAh battery that Nokia 5 packs. It’s can hold even more if you take some tweaks. Namely, even though the clean stock Android is good for battery consumption, you can still do some things to make it even better. After some time of use, the background apps tend to pile up and feast on your phone’s resources. For that purpose, we prepared some possible tweaks you should take into consideration in order to vastly improve your battery life:

  • Terminate background apps.
  • Use Battery saving mode.
  • Manually adjust the screen brightness.
  • Disable Wi-Fi scanning.
  • Disable Bluetooth.

Sudden restarts

If you have had experienced boot loops on Nokia 5, there are 3 things we suspect:

  • Hardware is faulty and you should contact your carrier or Nokia support center for repair or replacement.
  • You’ve tempered with custom ROM’s and created a grave problem. Warranty won’t cover rooted devices and don’t do it if you’re not sure how it’s done.
  • Some third-party app is causing this unusual behavior.

What you can do is to boot into Recovery mode and wipe cache partition. That’s a long shot, but you won’t lose any data, so it’s worth a try. Follow the instructions below to do so on your Nokia 5:

  1. Power off your phone.
  2. Press and hold the Power button and Volume Up button until the phone boots into the Recovery mode.
  3. By using the Volume keys, navigate through the menu until you reach the ”wipe cache partition”.
  4. Press the Power button to confirm the selection.
  5. Press the Power button again to restart your device.

Mobile Data issues

Even though the Wi-Fi connection is always preferred, it’s hard to use it on the move. That makes a 4G a valuable network alternative. And, if we take into consideration the current speeds and coverage, Mobile Data isn’t lacking much in comparison to Wi-Fi. Nokia 5 is, as most other modern smartphones, covered in that department. However, certain users reported issues with the LTE after some time of use. Allegedly, they’ve experienced unstable connection and frequent crashes on Nokia 5.

This might be due to bad network coverage, flawed or incorrectly set SIM card, wrong APN settings and many others. So, make sure to check the list below and we should overcome the issue together.

  • Reset Network Settings.
  • Re-establish carrier settings manually. For the individual setup, check your carrier’s site.
  • Disable Bluetooth while using Mobile Data.
  • Make sure you haven’t set Mobile Data limit.
  • Check your SIM card.
  • Switch to other data transfer technology, i.e. from 3G to 4G or LTE.
  • Wipe cache partition.
  • Restore factory settings.

That should do it. Have in mind that these are mostly individual issues, and that, to date, Nokia 5 is performing quite well for the majority of users. In case you have additional issues, make sure to report them below. We’ll make sure to try and help you. Thanks for reading and have a good day.

It goes off by itself but the greatest problem is the issue of not charging.

  7. I bought a Nokia 5 and it is getting slower and slower- to the point the SatNav is so slow we have passed the junction before it told me to turn- we drove round in circles.
It’s slow in all other actions, too.
Takes several seconds to load WhatsApp, or Facebook etc.
I’ve not added many apps at all, so not I’ve overfilled it.
Went back to Car phone warehouse, who loaded a cleaner, but only marginal improvement.
Am not happy with phone at all.

EE has tested my SIM on a different phone and there is no problem at all. Nokia however insist my provider can change the time out time ! Have you had any luck resolving this issue?

  14. After updating to 8.0, the music player app (all music apps – Google play, Music player,…) is turned-off after screen sleep for awhile, from seeking info from net other background apps were closed by system by the reason to save the battery, some experts tell that the internal system service name “Tasks kill” will kill all apps are running in background after screen gone off.

Please any expert suggest the way to continue playing music after screen off, Thks you.

  22. hi guys, i bought a nokia 5 a few weeks ago and and it worked
perfectly fine and i could say that it was one of the
best smartphones i’ve bought, after two weeks the device
had an issue with unlocking, the phone would switch off
on its own and refused to unlock and the screen would blick continuosly
as if it has a malfunction. i took the device back to the store
where i purchased the device and they refused to give me a new device.
instead the device went in for repairs. after two weeks they didn’t
communicate or atlease send me an sms as to whats happening with the
device. i had to call MTN contact centre on my own with my own airtime
and they told me that i was suppose to go to the store and pick up a new
device, when i went to the store the manager refused to give me a new
device and refused to follow up with the contact centre i had to then call
once the call centre once again and give the phone to the manager then only
he asked me to pick a another device. this was the WORST experience ever!!!!
edgars is giving MTN a bad name i am really pissed off and would never
recommend this device and network to anyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • That’s a usual thing about Android OS, as long as the data service is on, all data using apps starts on it own. So if you are not ready to use your internet services, just off it in the settings
