Apple strives for perfection. That’s why it designed the iPhone, along with iOS as its heart and soul, to be nearly impeccable. But as appealing as the whole “perfection concept” sounds, it’s a Sisyphean task. Nothing’s perfect, not even the iPhone. Users still have to deal with those little annoyances that can casually spoil the whole experience. Of course, one of these bugs will make you jump out of the iPhone wagon, but still… One of these inconsistencies I personally, and I assume you too, find annoying is when the default keyboard sound unexpectedly becomes louder. This happens all of a sudden and initially seems unprovoked. The loud click of the iPhone keyboard is especially frustrating when you have your earphones on, and the unexpected boom blows your ears off.
When doing the research for this article, I noticed that the problem has been around for years. And apparently, it still bugs users to this day. This is the first problem, or irritant if you would, I noticed when I switched from Android to iOS when I was met with a clicking noise.
So, what’s it all about? Why does the iPhone keyboard click unpredictably and go loud sometimes? Well as it appears, that happens because of the way your iOS works. Namely, when you receive a notification, your phone will turn the volume up by a bar to improve the chances of you hearing the incoming notification.
But if you happen to be typing on your keyboard at the same time you receive the notification, the keyboard click will go louder, as well.
So, is there a solution? Not. As I mentioned, this problem’s been around for years, and Apple still hasn’t done anything about it. Maybe we’ll eventually get a fix in the future, but judging by how much time has passed since this was originally reported, I’m not very optimistic.
iPhone typing sound suddenly loud
Switch to haptics
That’s right, there’s no way to deal with this, so if you want your keyboard to keep clicking, you’ll just have to live with it. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to. I recommend completely turning off the keyboard sound and switching to haptics instead.
Not only that you won’t develop a fear of incoming notifications, but it will also feel nice on your fingers. At least that’s how I like my keyboard.
In case you don’t know how to switch your iPhone keyboard to haptics, just follow these instructions:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Scroll down and select the Keyboard Feedback option.
- Disable Sound and enable only (optionally) System Haptics.
That’s about it, the keyboard clicks are now off. From now on, the only thing you’ll feel is a gentle vibration. Some users suggest restarting the iPhone fixes the issue but we can’t say with certainty this is the case for everyone. Also, you should definitely keep your iPhone up to date. To check for updates, navigate to Settings > General > Software update.
You can also download Gboard and use it as the default keyboard on your iPhone. With it, you’ll lose some functionality but have a better time with the loud Keyboard clicking sound and haptic feedback. You can download Gboard for your iPhone on App Store.
That concludes this article. I know this is no good news for users who prefer keyboard clicks, but unfortunately, there’s nothing you can do about it. If you want to do something about iPhone Keyboard loud click, report the problem to Apple right away.
