iPhone brightness keeps changing? Here’s what to do

The iPhone brightness keeps changing erratically for some users even with Auto-Brightness off. Others report that there’s a change in the color tint, too. Don’t worry, this is actually a feature and we’ll explain how to get rid of it in a few simple steps. Learn more on how to prevent your device from changing the brightness on its own below.

Why does my phone keep dimming with Auto-Brightness off?

With Auto-Brightness enabled, your screen brightness will change based on the environmental light. The lighter your surrounding, the higher the brightness. However, if the Auto-Brightness is off but the iPhone keeps dimming for some reason, there’s another option that might affect the screen.

And that’s the True Tone option that automatically adapts colors to keep them consistent in different ambient conditions. Simply put, True Tone does with colors what Auto-Brightness does with, well, brightness. By changing colors, this feature can make your display seem warmer and brighter when there’s a lot of ambient light and colder and darker in a dark environment.

But, let’s check if the Auto-Brightness is off and then we can disable True Tone. Here’s how to disable Auto-Brightness on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Accessibility.
  3. Select Display & Text Size.
  4. Scroll to the bottom and disable Auto-Brightness.iphone brightness keeps changing

After that, let’s disable True Tone. Follow these instructions to disable the True Tone feature on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Display & Brightness.
  3. Toggle Off True Tone.iphone brightness keeps changing
  4. Open Night Shift and disable it.

If your iPhone continues dimming the screen even with all these options disabled, make sure that your iPhone firmware is up to date. We can also recommend resetting all settings to default values and disabling Auto-Brightness once more. To Reset All Settings, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.

You can also perform a factory reset as the last resort if the previous steps failed and the iPhone brightness keeps changing. Just make sure to back up everything before doing so. Also, reporting the problem to Apple is a good idea. And, with that said, we can conclude this article.

Thank you for reading and we hope that these steps helped you address the problem. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section below.
