It’s hard to imagine something as essential and simple as an alarm not working but that’s exactly what’s bothering some iPhone users. Namely, for some of them, the alarm doesn’t go off at all while others report that the alarm goes off but it’s silent or only vibrates. Why does my alarm go off but no sound?
Before doing anything, we need to get a few things out of the way. The Do Not Disturb mode and Silent switch don’t affect alarms. You can turn them ON or OFF — it doesn’t matter when it comes to alarms. Also, make sure that your device is up to date because there were reports about alarm issues in earlier iterations of iOS.
After that, we suggest checking the volume slider, changing the alarm ringtone, or deleting old alarms and adding new ones. The app and its tasks are rather simple so the solutions for this problem are not exactly complex.
1. Check the volume settings
The first thing you need to check is the default volume slider in the system settings. By default, this slider is not affected by volume buttons as they lower or increase only media volume. If you have the Change with Buttons feature enabled, you might’ve accidentally lowered the volume.
So, make sure to set the ringtone volume is not muted. Here’s what you need to do:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Use the slider under the Ringer and Alerts to increase the volume.
2. Change the alarm sound
If there’s still no sound on your iPhone alarm, you should check the Alarm Sound. There’s an option to set None and only rely on vibration to wake you up. Obviously, we don’t want that in this scenario so choosing any of the available ringtones is the way to go.
Here’s how to change the alarm sound on your iPhone:
- Open the Clock app.
- Tap on the alarm to edit it.
- Select Sound.
- Choose your preferred sound from the Ringtones section.
- Tap on Save at the top right corner.
3. Delete and add the alarm again
Finally, if you’re still experiencing issues, make sure to delete the current alarm and set a new one. With the previous instructions in mind, a new alarm should go off with a sound.
To create a new alarm, open the Clock app. Remove all other alarms and disable the Sleep/Wake Up alarm. Then tap on the Plus sign in the top right corner to add a new alarm.
Alternatively, you can download and use another clock app that offers an option to set alarms. There’s a handful of those in the App Store.
