Google Home products and newer iterations that go under the Google Nest moniker are not of much use without a stable wireless connection. Connection-related issues are definitely the most common ones along with bugs that are somewhat expected in this ever-improving industry. Some users report that Google Nest keeps disconnecting from the wireless network while others can’t seem to connect to a network at all.
If you are among the affected users, check the steps we provided below to fix the problem. Also, if the issue persists even after you tested different routers and gone through the steps, report the problem to Google Nest Support.
Table of contents:
- Restart Google Home (Nest) and router
- Forget the network and set up the device again
- Disconnect some devices from the network
- Put Google Home (Nest) closer to the router
- Reinstall the Google Home app
- Factory reset Google Home (Nest)
Google Nest Mini keeps disconnecting
1. Restart Google Home (Nest) and router
The first thing you should do is restart your Google Nest or Home and also restart your Wi-Fi router. Try voice trigger to see if the Google Home has a connection to Wi-Fi after a minute or so.
If you have a dual-band Wi-Fi router, try switching from 2.4GHz to 5GHz band (or vice versa). Although 2.4GHz is more frequently used, 5GHz band APs are often less cluttered.
If your Google Mini is closer to the router without walls in between, you should go for the 5GHz option. However, if you can’t run separate two SSIDs, have in mind that most older devices work solely on the 2.4GHz band.
If restarting devices and tweaking router settings didn’t help, follow the next step on the list.
2. Forget the network and set up the device again
The next step is to remove the network and add the Google Home speaker back to the Google Home app. Once you add the device again and provide the network credentials, check the improvements. Hopefully, your Google Nest speaker or display won’t keep disconnecting afterward.
Here’s how to forget the network and add the device again to Google Home:
- Open the Google Home app on your Android or iPhone.
- Tap on the Google Nest speaker/display icon and then open Settings (cog icon at the top).
- Select Device information.
- Next to the Wi-Fi, tap Forget.
- Now, go back to the main screen and tap on the Plus icon at the top left corner.
- Tap “Set up device” and follow further instructions to add the Google Nest.
3. Disconnect some devices from the network
Google Nest (previously Google Home) devices don’t require super-fast internet to work as intended but the network has to be somewhat stable. This means that, usually, a regular basic router would work just fine. However, if you have a lot of devices connected at the same time, the problems might start.
So, try disconnecting some devices as a short-term solution. For the long-term solution, consider getting a mesh router. If that doesn’t help and your Google Home (Google Nest) keeps disconnecting, make sure to continue with the next solution.
4. Put Google Home (Nest) closer to the router
Although it’s not your preferred spot, keeping Google Nest (Google Home) device close to the router is usually a good idea. Unless you have invested in the aforementioned Wi-Fi mesh setup, chances are that Google Home won’t work if it’s too far from the router.
So, try placing it closer, restarting both devices, and checking for improvements. In case the issues persist, continue with the next step.
5. Reinstall the Google Home app
You can also try reinstalling the Google Home app and setting up your Home again. Although this doesn’t have much to do with connectivity issues, it’s still a viable troubleshooting step.
Here’s how to reinstall the Google Home app on Android:
- Open the Play Store and look for Google Home.
- Expand the app and tap Uninstall.
- Restart your device and install Google Home from Play Store.
- Open Google Home, choose your Google Account and sign in again.
In addition, if you are in the Preview program for Google Nest products, make sure to leave it. You can do that by navigating to Google Home > Your Nest/Home speaker or display > Device information > Preview program.
6. Factory reset Google Home (Nest)
Finally, if none of the previous steps worked for you and Google Nest keeps disconnecting, you should definitely reset the device to factory settings and set it up again. Since everything related to all your smart devices is bound to your account and cloud-based, there’s no need to worry about losing settings. The only thing you’ll have to do after the setup is to change the default voice and that’s it.
Here’s how to factory reset your Google Nest speaker:
- Press the button on the bottom and hold it until you hear the signal. On some smart displays, like Google Nest Hub, holding both volume buttons for 10 seconds brings the same result.
- You’ll see LED (blue LED lights) or on-display confirmation that your device is reset.
- Once you reset your smart speaker/smart display, open the Google Home app, enable Bluetooth and Location, and set up your Google Nest anew.
That should do it. Thank you for reading and feel free to share your thoughts, questions, or suggestions with us in the comments section below. You can also reach us on Facebook and Twitter. We look forward to hearing from you.
