Gboard not working on iOS 16 (SOLVED)

Why is Gboard crashing on iPhone?

Most iPhone users use the native keyboard, and a lot of users use cross-platform options like Gboard or SwiftKey. These usually work without problems and you can set them as the default option in Keyboard settings. However, we run into reports of Gboard not working on iOS 16.

For most users who reported the problem, it seems that Gboard mostly works without issues but crashes or freezes in certain apps (Spotlight Search is an example).

Why is Gboard crashing on iPhone?

If Gboard is crashing on your iPhone, it might be due to problems with first-party services on your iPhone optimized for the first-party iPhone Keyboard. App updates by Google usually solve this, but you can try fixing it on your own with a few simple steps.

1. Check Keyboard settings

Start with Keyboard settings. For starters, make sure that Gboard is enabled and has Full Access. After that, ensure that the Gboard is on the list of available keyboard options.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Gboard.
  3. Choose Keyboards.
  4. Enable both Gboard and Allow Full Access.Gboard not working iOS

If the Gboard is still not working on iOS 16, remove it and add it again.

2. Remove and add Gboard again

Another thing you can try is to remove the Gboard from Keyboards and add it again at the top of the list. It helped some users address the problem since Gboard stopped crashing after that.

Here’s how to remove and add Gboard on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Open Keyboard.
  4. Select Keyboards from the top.
  5. Tap Edit.
  6. Remove Gboard.Gboard not working iOS
  7. Tap Add New Keyboard.
  8. Select Gboard.
  9. Tap Edit again and drag the Gboard to the top of the list to make it the default keyboard.

Some users suggest adding a stock keyboard option to the list, too, in case some app or service doesn’t work well with Gboard.

3. Reinstall Gboard

If you’re still having issues with Gboard on iOS you should reinstall the app. You can do that from system settings or App Library. There’s a way to reset iPhone Keyboard, but not Gboard. Here’s how to reinstall Gboard on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select General.
  3. Choose iPhone Storage.
  4. Select Gboard.
  5. Tap Delete App.
  6. Open App Store and install Gboard again.
  7. Go to Settings > General > Keyboard and add Gboard again.

4. Reset All Settings and try again

Finally, we can suggest resetting all settings and giving Gboard another try. If that does nothing, you need to wait until the next Gboard update which should, hopefully, address the problem completely.

To Reset All Settings on your iPhone, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset and select Reset All Settings. With that said, we can conclude this article. Thank you for reading, so feel free to share your thoughts, questions, or suggestions with us in the comments below.
