Changing the Wi-Fi network on smart devices might not be something we do on a regular basis unless we want to address a certain connectivity problem. How do I change the Wi-Fi network on a Google Home display or speaker?
You can change the Wi-Fi network on your Google Home speaker or display by forgetting the current one and setting up the device again. There’s an option in Google Home device settings that allows you to forget the present Wi-Fi and set up the device with a new network. Much simpler than going for the factory reset which is necessary on most other smart home devices like bulbs, smart plugs, etc. Unless they come with a hub as Philips Hue lights do.
Here’s how to change the Wi-Fi network on your Google Home or Google Nest speaker/display:
- Open the Google Home app on your Android or iOS handset.
- Select the speaker or display.
- Tap on the gear icon at the top to open Settings.
- Choose Device information.
- Tap on Wi-Fi and then tap Forget network. The device will go offline for obvious reasons.
- After that, tap on Devices > Add (the plus icon) and select Set up a device.
- Tap New device.
- Enable Bluetooth and Location on your phone and follow further instructions to set up the speaker or display with a new Wi-Fi network.
As we said, unlike Google-made smart speakers and displays (and some other devices in the Nest lineup), other third-party devices (like Smart Life Plug) usually require a factory reset in case you are changing the Wi-Fi network. In order to do that, you’ll need a companion app provided by the OEM.
