Can’t sign out of Apple ID? Here’s what you need to do

cant sign out of apple id

Some iOS users report that they can’t sign out of Apple ID no matter what they try. It seems that the Apple ID option is greyed out. Now, you can contact Apple Support or follow the instructions we provided for you. We have a few recommended troubleshooting steps to fix the issue at hand.

Table of contents:

  1. Restart your iPhone and try again with Wi-Fi On
  2. Check Content & Privacy Restrictions
  3. Disable Find My iPhone
  4. Reset your device to factory settings and restore it from iCloud or iTunes

Why can’t I sign out of my iCloud on my iPhone?

If you can’t sign out of your iCloud, try restarting your iPhone. If that does nothing, check Content & Privacy Restrictions and disable Find My iPhone. You can also reset your Apple ID password. Finally, if the option to Sign Out is still greyed out, you should probably reset and restore your iPhone from iCloud or iTunes. If you bought a used or refurbished device, make sure to ask the seller to remove the old account. Learn more about it below.

1. Restart your iPhone and try again with Wi-Fi On

The first thing you should do is restart your iPhone and try again. This might as well be a temporary glitch and a quick restart should fix it. Obviously, you’ll need to enable Wi-Fi to sign out of your Apple ID (iCloud) because this is a cloud-based service.

If that did nothing and the Sign Out button is still greyed out, check the next step.

2. Check Content & Privacy Restrictions

All parental control options available on iOS can be found in Content & Privacy Restrictions, under Screen Time. With them, you can restrict changes to most settings and, in this exact case, prevent changes to Apple ID. That includes logging out and making any changes to passwords and credentials.

Here’s where to find the option that blocks changes to Apple ID under Content & Privacy Restrictions:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Screen Time.
  3. Expand Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  4. Open Account Changes.
  5. Choose Allow.can't sign out of apple id

If you still can’t sign out of your Apple ID, try disabling Find My.

3. Disable Find My iPhone

Some users managed to sign out from the Apple ID account by disabling the Find My iPhone feature in system settings. When enabled, this feature allows you to track your iPhone in case you lost it. In addition, it allows you to remotely lock or erase the device. However, it might prevent signing out of your account because of a security protocol.

Here’s how to disable Find My on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose your account from the top.
  3. Tap on the Find My option.
  4. Select Find My iPhone.
  5. Disable this option and enter your Apple ID password to confirm your choice.can't sign out of apple id

4. Reset your device to factory settings and restore it from iCloud or iTunes

Finally, you can try resetting your iPhone to factory settings and restoring it from iCloud. Or, even better, if you use iTunes on your PC, you can use it to reset and restore your device. Just don’t forget to back up everything to iCloud or iTunes before resetting the device because this process will erase all data from your iPhone.

Here’s how to reset your iPhone to factory settings:

  1. Open Settings. Select your Account > iCloud > iCloud Backup and back up your iPhone.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Select Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Follow further instructions to reset and then restore your iPhone with the AppleID.

Alternatively, you can connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac and, after you back up the data, restore the device there.
